It's kind of been that way since VisualStudio 6 I think, the MS debugger in VS6 was quite neat. The visual debugging tools were always pretty good. Hmm, this has got me wondering if there's anything like this available for vim, this looks like it might be neat: http://vim.sourceforge.net/scripts/script.php?script_id=663 http://vim.sourceforge.net/scripts/script.php?script_id=663 But no C/C++ support. Could be useful for Ruby though.
