Because every damn computer manufacturer out there insists that the only thing that is worth a damn in Windows 8 is the touch interface, when it's the exact opposite.
The bean counters always love to do this, even though they haven't the slightest clue how an OS works.
- freehunter 13y agoBut it's not the manufacturers that are bothering me. I applaud the wave of innovation (even if it is misguided most of the time) in form factors that Windows 8 has spawned. I've always liked the idea of a tablet with a keyboard dock that would turn the computer into a workstation. Meanwhile desktops and laptops are still selling just like they always have. What's bothering me is the constant complaint I see, every bit as misguided, on every single post related Windows 8. It's the same as on every post related to a Google product, the only thing people talk about is Reader and how they don't trust Google anymore. And the biggest problem is that I'm hearing people who don't read tech news saying that so-and-so told them Windows 8 was only for touch screens and they can't use it. The misinformation campaign is so massive with Windows 8 that I have to believe it's coordinated somewhere. All I want is some legitimate conversation about a subject I'm interested in, but it's completely drowned out by useless and baseless complaints. Every time I see a post complaining about Windows 8, I now wonder if the person is a mindless parrot thinking they're cool for hating on a popular subject or if they're paid by someone. Who? I don't know. I don't care. We get it, you think it's cool to say Windows 8 is only designed for touch screens, even though that's a load of shit. It's been over a year. Either find a new talking point or just shut up and let the conversation move forward. It's not the bean counters. It's not the manufacturers. It's you that I'm pissed at.
- kunai 13y agoThere's no need for the animosity. I didn't mean it was only designed for touch screens, just that desktop features had been deprecated in favor of touchscreens. And that's true. Look at the hot corners you can't disable, or the Metro dialogs for settings. It's Victor Frankenstein's OS, not a desktop computer's.
- freehunter 13y agoYou must understand that all of this may be frustrating to you, but it's not going away. Equally frustrating is seeing every conversation completely derailed by these complaints. Every article on HN about Windows 8, every article on Reddit, on Ars Technica, on CNet, on Engadget, and increasingly even in real life. It's a skipping record, and it hasn't stopped in over a year. If anything, it's just getting louder. You must understand the frustration in trying to have a serious conversation about a topic only to have loudmouth troublemakers constantly popping up and shouting over you. Do you Windows 8 haters really think if you keep repeating yourself but only louder this time that suddenly your whining will be taken seriously? Ask any 5 year old how well that works. It's been over a year. If you don't understand it, you never will. It's time to drop it.
