It really depends on the contest. I've found that most are algorithm-based, which is fun, but doesn't leave too much room for variety. Programming contesta also have a relatively high barrier of entry. Maybe some sort of restriction so only accounts with less than x 'experience' can participate could help make it easier for newcomers to join.
