More often than not you'll either be strong in design/art, OR strong in programming. The question is though whether that's a natural law, or an artefact of the culture of those communities of practice. Personally I lean towards the latter. I'm seeing a lot more dev folk get more than competent on the design side (and a few UX folk getting competent on the dev side).
