As a social mechanism, I think this is a great idea. This is vetted members of the scientific community (as well as just about anyone) speaking their support and hopefully lending to the thought that punishing this girl is unfair. This is a pretty awesome use of twitter. Hashtags allow a common chain of discussion, and the low-barrier-to-contribution encourages anyone and everyone to weigh in their support.
