SQLite hits the disk on each transaction. It's up to the app developer to group their operations efficiently. Most don't. Did you make good use of transactions in your tests? In this respect I feel like SQLite is also the OpenGL of data... not just the MP3. It's up to you to understand the correct methods of using it that result in acceptable performance.
