I'm assuming the saying is because of all the stories about wealthy people not being as happy as you would assume. Stories about unhappy, but rich misers have been around a long time, so I'd guess that there's some truth to them. Money buys experiences and comfort, but it can't buy true relationships. Money doesn't fix the selfishness or unforgiveness that destroys your marriage. Money doesn't make up for all the time you spent working instead of relating to family and friends. I've heard some stories about rich men dying unhappy, but I can't find any on Google.
