I will turn this into a longer post, but there are projects like DocumentCloud which are run by a non-profit, produce 100% open source code, and which could absolutely benefit from hackers, who are interested in doing good. Besides Backbone.js, Underscore.js, Jammit & Docsplit, DocumentCloud also has several Open Source products (such as the documentcloud platform, and our document viewer, which is even used by the FBI). These projects serve a civic mission through making journalism more open and more efficient.
