I've never had that problem, but I've only been on OS X since Snow Leopard, and it seems that things have remained pretty consistent. I also try to do as much installation from Homebrew (http://mxcl.github.io/homebrew/ http://mxcl.github.io/homebrew/) as possible, so that I can let the package manager worry about stuff like that.
