Why do we have any laws controlling immigration at all? Why can't anyone migrate and live/work anywhere they want and for any company they want, doing any kind

Why do we have any laws controlling immigration at all? Why can't anyone migrate and live/work anywhere they want and for any company they want, doing any kind of work they want? Why do nation states exist at all? Passports, visas, check points... Why does any of that exist?
