The more I think about this the less I think its painting an accurate picture. Sure startups may not hire older engineers to work at the front of the application stack, but as engineers age they tend to either start specializing in an area, moving deeper into the stack or move into leadership roles and the types of companies that have specific needs in those areas tend to be larger and more established.
