Why not use Recurly, BrainTree or something similar?

  recurly founded 2009. Braintree founded 2007. When this code had to be written? 2005.

  That's like asking "why not just drive there" of people who lived in the early 19th century. It's easy to forget just how quickly technology progresses :)
