Have you tried having a read of The Non-designers Design Book? While it won't make you a master designer, it will give you some basics. Notably CRAP (Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, Proximity) and the basics of colour theory and typography. I found it to be an extremely easy read with good exercises for people like me who are somewhat aesthetically challenged.
