i had similar thoughts and the possibility that bitcoin was written by the us government seems conclusive to me. two more possibilities : * maybe it can be a way to liquidate the overwhelming national debt. * what are these numbers all miners are crunching -> maybe decoding military stuff.

What the miners are crunching is well documented as part of the protocol specification and a clear case of "nothing up my sleeve".
