Show HN: gitdown - prevents you from coding drunk
- eduardordm 14y agoWhat is the point of TDD if you are not allowed to code drunk? :D
- civilian 14y agoI was like: "huh, I wonder if there is a quote about the TDD workflow being so good that you can code drunk." so I googl'd for "TDD drunk". Turns out TDD also stands for Teenage Drunk Driving. :-/
- bnycum 14y agoI think TDD was suppose to stand for Tequila Driven Development. I had just heard the term this weekend from a random tweet.
- HeyLaughingBoy 14y agoHmmm. I once coded a tiny app for a bottle of Patron. Wonder if that counts?
- koenigdavidmj 14y agoIn light of Mr Kernighan's quote: > Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it. I was advised that one should code stoned, debug caffeinated, and document drunk.
- pavel_lishin 14y agoSure, but who wants to read the FAQ section of a manual whose every answer is "Because fuck you, that's why. Wanna fight about it?"
- eLobato 14y agoThey demo'ed this with Listerine instead of real alcohol and it worked well. Honestly I'm tempted to buy a Drinkshield.
- jstanley 14y agoUnless they drank enough Listerine to become drunk, I would suggest the opposite. It isn't measuring BAC very well at all if it is easily confused by someone who has used mouthwash. EDIT: That's not to say it isn't an awesome project, which it definitely is :)
- danso 14y agoIt's worth noting that swishing Listerine (which does contan real alcohol) will fool police breathalyzers, if you use it minutes before the test. This is why you do a long series of physical coordination tests before finally getting a breathalyzer test when being pulled over: http://askville.amazon.com/Crest-mouthwash-make-fail-breathalyzer/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=8125226 http://askville.amazon.com/Crest-mouthwash-make-fail-breatha...
- gklitt 14y agoIndeed, this is exactly what we did in our demo! We just swished with Listerine and immediately breathalyzed on stage and it worked great. We found that the Listerine effect seems to diminish quickly after several minutes.
- volaski 14y agocan you get drunk by drinking listerine?
- Houshalter 14y agoI looked it up and it is about 21% ethanol. Which is more than most drinks I think. EDIT: On further research it seems that they put stuff into mouthwash to make it undrinkable, in order to prevent abuse and avoid taxes and regulation on alcohol. That doesn't prevent you from ingesting it however. It's just supposed to make it unpleasant.
- mkrecny 14y agoSensational, useless.
- pc86 14y agoKilljoy.
- Hovertruck 14y agoSimilar project from last year from my friend Adam: https://github.com/akdetrick/ballmer https://github.com/akdetrick/ballmer
- gklitt 14y agoWell, looks like we weren't the only ones to have this idea! I think our project fits more naturally into a standard git workflow because the script is automatically called as a git hook. His project does have us beat with displaying messages as rainbow ASCII art though.. :)
- systematical 14y agoThis is pretty cool, but why would anyone want to program drunk? Maybe I'll program for a few minutes over the occasional glass of wine as I am gearing down for bed, but full on drunk? No...
- neilmiddleton 14y agoYou program sober?
- tterrace 14y agoThis is awesome, there's just something that's inherently cool about building things that take physical input using hardware other than a mouse & keyboard.
- joeblau 14y agoWhen I read the name, I think of Arnold Schwarzenegger trying to say "get down"
- sspiff 14y agoWhen I read your comment, I couldn't help but think of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yn3Xp2jkTZQ&t=116 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yn3Xp2jkTZQ&t=116
- ramseynasser 14y agoGeoffrey and Alex are super sharp hackers and awesome people. Here's a video of them demonstrating the project: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnBb1wmHj5k http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnBb1wmHj5k
- mholkesvik 14y agoI need something like this for my phone. Nice work Geoffrey and Alex!
- rhokstar 14y agoThis is genius.
- losethos 14y agoThe Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost 2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,[b] 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.” ---- It get's old. Funny thing is they didn't record what the Holy Spirit said! God says.... 24:9 Remember what the LORD thy God did unto Miriam by the way, after that ye were come forth out of Egypt. 24:10 When thou dost lend thy brother any thing, thou shalt not go into his house to fetch his pledge. 24:11 Thou shalt stand abroad, and the man to whom thou dost lend shall bring out the pledge abroad unto thee. 24:12 And if the man be poor, thou shalt not sleep with his pledge: 24:13 In any case thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God. 24:14 Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates: 24:15 At his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.
