If they really have the chops and motivation (wishing for it doesn't make it so), it may be a valuable life experience for them to give it a try. If they "succeed" they've saved years of expensive tuition. If they "fail", then they'll have a lot better idea of what the real world's like ... always valuable when choosing a college major, if they go that way.
