Ask HN: What tools do you use to monitor your servers?
I recently ran into a problem where MySQL was running out of connections. For now I've upped the maximum_connections setting and I'm keeping a close eye on the server.
I'm sure there are lots of tools that could monitor this sort of thing for me, and alert me if any problems occur (or ideally before they occur).
I suspect there are also tools that would make it easier for me to diagnose the problem, and allow me to see what was happening on the server at the time.
So my question for HN is: What tools do you use to monitor your servers?
- pclark 18y agoGetExceptional for rails apps & pingdom for everything else.
- barredo 18y agoI made a tiny script on my server that get's all the numbers that I want (http connectios, mysql connections, cpu usage, etc) and put them on a txt file. The only thing I got to do is check the file online whenever I want. You could do this and also add email alerts easily.

- iuguy 18y agoMunin and Monit, mostly. And it's a PITA to set up but Puppet is incredible, especially when combined with git. You can automatically redeploy your infrastructure pretty much at the drop of a hat.
- hedgehog 18y agoMunin + some shell scripts that make sure the web server is rendering pages that look reasonable.
