Is is just me, or has JavaScript got really fucking weird lately?

  It's not the language, it's the reverse-eternal-september caused by people who are actual programmers with an actual background in computer science writing node applications on the server and client applications in the browser. As long as it was just DHTML for doing some form validation or whatever, it was treated like a "scripting" language. Either that, or the fumes of smugness are getting to people.
