"My dad taught me the basics of home building/improvements" ... "My friends were always playing and working on their cars" You're actually agreeing. You were taught and brought up in an environment where people learnt the skills then you can get by fine. I certainly wasn't, and I have wasted much time, effort and money getting shoddy results which I'd then have to pay a tradesman to fix afterwards.
