There is a threshold to prevent excessive and abusive flagging. If
your 'flag' link disappears, then you've crossed the threshold.
The handling of flags on HN is a lot more elaborate and
effective than most people realize, and only some of the details
are publicly known. Eons ago pg said flags are scrutinized and
weighted. If a user consecutively makes "bad" flags, then the flags
of that user count less. On the other hand, if a user consistently
makes "good" flags, then the flags of that user count more.
- sidcool 14y agoOh, is it? Then when can I expect to be able to flag again? Because a lot of bad links are getting through.
- jcr 14y agoI don't know when or if you'll be able to flag again. Some consequences are temporary and last for a month or two, but others are permanent. As I mentioned before, many of the details are not public. Your best bet is to wait a month or two, and if flagging doesn't get enabled, then contact YC. Most of HN is designed on the principle of "Enough Rope" from the old phrase, "Give him enough rope to hang himself, and he will." The important thing for you to realized is, you did this to yourself. The threshold is designed to prevent abuse. If all of your flags were deemed "good," then it's unlikely that you would have reached the threshold. It's possible you are flagging too much, or many of your flags are deemed as "bad," or both.
