I'm excited for this release. I'm not sure if I understand what "method values" are though

  Yes, I wondered about that. Is it just that the function func (w *Writer, int n) { } is actually a method, like: func (w *Writer) Anon(int n) { }

    No, it means that it is now possible to use methods as first-class values as well, just like functions: http://tip.golang.org/ref/spec#Method_values http://tip.golang.org/ref/spec#Method_values
