- seivan 14y ago1) Learn to code your own God Damn Design™ 2) Get an illustrator (or learn how to draw, but this is much much more harder than learning how to sling junk in Photoshop/CSS/UIAppearanceProxy ) For iOS, a developer that can do the design work is worth much more than two entities who does not know the other side.
- pazimzadeh 14y agoI've seen you write a variation of the same idea on so many Hacker News stories in the past few weeks. Maybe you should write a blog post explaining in detail why you think that this is true, and perhaps we can have a civilized discussion about it without resorting to name calling (UX monkey, slinging junk). https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5393816 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5393816 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5382167 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5382167 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5393816 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5393816 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5306823 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5306823 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5306817 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5306817 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5182105 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5182105 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5138904 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5138904 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5128165 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5128165

- wsc981 14y ago> For iOS, a developer that can do the design work is worth much more than two entities who does not know the other side. I believe this is very much true. I hate the fact that I'm still a lousy designer, but I'm hopeful that with courses like HackDesign[1] I'm able to improve myself. I realise I know what a good user interface feels or looks like, but it's just so much harder to develop, yet at the same time it's almost a necessary skill for an iOS developer. - seivan 14y agoI'll grant you it's not easy, but once you master both, it's quite nice to imagine something and then just do it. Not just in Photoshop (I've stopped using Photoshop and rely on Core Graphics). It's hard to do patterns with core graphics, so I tend to go with more a flatter design with shadows. But one thing you do need, is a good illustrator. It's incredibly hard to learn that stuff. Learning good looking design work is incredibly easy, especially once you got the code stuff covered. But drawings... that's something else, I gave up there. I can't draw.
- gdubs 14y agoIf you're an aspiring iOS dev/designer and any of this sounds new, you should read Apple's human interface guidelines: http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/ipad/#documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/MobileHIG/Introduction/Introduction.html http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/ipad/#documentation/U...
