What connection does bit.ly have to Libya?

  Certain TLDs have restrictions on their use, and .ca is one of those. Many registration authorities choose to let anyone buy their domains because it's a big source of income. Libya is one of those (or always used to be. Since the revolution it's been less clear).

  Only that at one point, to purchase the rights to that domain name, they effectively paid the Ghaddafi regime a small amount of money, and that they run a popular service that at any time could be hijacked by the current regime in Libya.
