I wonder how far they could have got going more of a bare-bones Sinatra app using JRuby. It's still not nearly as fast as Go obviously, but take away Rails and some of the more dynamic usages of Ruby on a faster VM and I'd venture to guess you might have been able to go from 30 servers to 10-15? That's still not 2 mind you...
