I agree completely. I've worked with a range of people across a pretty broad "social spectrum" (from very close friends, to acquaintances, to family etc.) but the one guy I've worked with the longest was from a random job ad and, although we get along just fine, we're completely different people. In fact, because of that I have learned a lot that I probably otherwise wouldn't have.
