Mutter works...now. Ubuntu used mutter at one point and it was TERRIBLE. Performance, crashes and the lot. I recall they tried to improve it and got massive pushback from GNOME.
This led them to use Compiz, which had its own issues.
I can totally see why they would do something like Mir given the history of non-supportiveness they got from the various upstream projects in the past.
- drivebyacct2 14y ago/shrug I don't have a problem with Mir, mostly just the way it was announced by dumping on Wayland. Frankly, with Canonical working closely with Nvidia on an EGL driver that Wayland could also use... I see a net win for everyone when the dust settles. It's funny, anyone remember Beryl? Compiz-fusion? :) Fun times in OSS land.
