I agree with you there - having built out even small to medium sized Backbone apps, you find yourself wondering what the "Backbone way" to do things is, only to find there is no "Backbone way." Something I've found which does a great job of filling in those gaps is MarionetteJS (https://github.com/marionettejs/backbone.marionette https://github.com/marionettejs/backbone.marionette). Definitely worth checking out.
