Fraud is a huge motivation but one thing the article doesn't mention is sales tax. When I sell a product online, I need to charge sales tax if the customer lives in Canada, a different tax if the customer lives in my province, or no tax if the customer lives in another country. Therefore, I'm forced to ask for the customer's address just for this. That said, I can probably still avoid asking for a lot of the info but this requirement still increases the minimum set.
