I'd never work for a place that gave me a fucking puzzle to solve. I'd probably smack the interviewer upside the head for wasting my time. The best way to do it is pay the person per task as an independent contractor until you're sure a full time position is what you're both looking for. If they're helpful to you then you keep calling them and if not everybody keeps their dignity, no big deal. Don't humiliate potential employees right off the bat with stupid games.
