Unfortunately for us Americans, the Swiss have had at least a couple of hundreds of years longer to evolve discourse in the public eye, depending on how you read your history. While there have been exceptions, I would imagine that the first real wide-ranging impact of such discourse in public in the States here began in the previous decade.
