Ask HN: How do you “manage” your customers?

I am currently trying to get someone else's customer management up to speed (online sale of physical goods). What I'm looking for is something that allows easy handling of customer data, run analysis about customer buying frequencies, customer segmentation, targeted email campaigns, a/b testing different mailing content, follow-up surveys, etc. Is salesforce the way to go or are there any better tools out there?
