Well, when I am working on a side product it is better for my work productivity than when I am not. When I am working on a side project I am in the kind of mood in which I can program for 16 hours straight. Doing two projects keeps things fresh. When I am not motivated enough to work on a side project I am more likely to zone out at work and spend an inordinate amount of time lurking on HN.
