I am in the US and this is great advice for handling this.
Also, they may threaten you with all sorts of stuff (like taking your furniture, car, etc). This is illegal to do and COMPLETE scare tactic. Tell them to come and try it.
They will also tell you that they cannot accept payments. Hold strong and tell them that is the only way you can make it work.
Also, if you need some time to get this underway request 'original proof of debt'. This takes them a bit of time to get to you. You are entitled to it and gives you some breathing space to get ducks in a row.
