Ask HN: Why do many consider email as "broken"

This is a common saying I found occasionally in blogs, tweets etc. I truly cannot see what is broken with email. In terms of signal vs. noise, it produces the best values comparing to social media. I think email is a tool I use even more than my text editor. So what is that I am missing, and what are the alternatives?
