Like most entertainment, BBT is a parody, exaggeration, and simplification of real life. I find a lot more relevant humor in it than in any other sit-com I've watched -- to the point where I could anticipate the joke because I had had the exact conversation with my friends. In the episode where the female characters go to the comic store (described in the OP), they then have an episode long argument on exactly who can move Thor's hammer, which I'm sure rang true to any comic reader.
