Oh that may be a mountain lion issue. I tried with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Lion 10.7.5

I'm also running the latest version of Chrome on Mountain Lion on a current Macbook Air, and I can't reproduce this. Entering file:/// just shows me "Index of /" as expected. Tried it in Safari and Firefox too, no issues.

The capital F (or indeed, any case version except all-lowercase, such as "fILE") is critical.

Tried that too. It does crash TextEdit, but not Chrome. OK, it also crashes Safari when capitalized.

Try adding a space after or something, so it doesn't auto-complete to your history of file:// urls?
