Show HN: My self-published C# Programming book: Print, PDF, ePub and Mobi
- walke 14y agoCongrats!
- fekberg 14y agoThank you! It's a very special feeling when you receive the first package of proof copies.
- manojlds 14y agoCan you (or have you) blog about the experience? Tips and tricks? I am planning on self-publishing a book on Powershell.
- mattmanser 14y agoHe already did, 2 days ago on HN: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5128197 http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5128197 I'm not sure he really should have titled this Show HN as he already has shown it to us. Very recently.
- vinkelhake 14y agoIt's just a bit of self-promotion. Compared to the last time[0], it seems pretty benign. [0] http://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/okpoh/more_readable_code_with_anonymous_functions/ http://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/okpoh/more_read...
- fekberg 14y agoIs there something wrong with showing off work that you are proud of? If something I share here gets upvotes then apparently some people find it interesting. Not trying to upset anyone here, I just want to share my work and share my story, that's all.
- RobertHoudin 14y agoUsing several aliases to promote your enterprise is deceitful and yes, there is something wrong with that.
- fekberg 14y agoRight, but I am not talking about the reddit stuff which was one year ago and I learnt from that mistake.
- fekberg 14y agoThe story that I shared is kind of incomplete at the moment, I haven't finished all the parts in the series. The reason that I posted this was that I wanted to show the end result which wasn't linked/mentioned in the story. Not aiming to break any rules or so here, just wanted to show off the result (fast forward from the blog series)
- danso 14y agoThis is true but I'm willing to give him a pass for being open to questions and writing such an exhaustive post-mortem of the process...plus, the original blog post he linked to didn't do a good job of linking to the final product (as it was written before publication, I guess).
- mattmanser 14y agoThere's a big link on the side. It's been out 6 months. This isn't a Show HN.

- celticninja 14y agoI didn't think that Show HN was limited to new things only, what happens when someone joins HN after they have produced something they think worthy of sharing? The great thing about HN is that readers can vote on whether they want to see stuff, i guess this was voted up enough for that reason.
- mattmanser 14y agoHis account is a year and half old and he has posted this book a lot of times already. I don't think he's crossed the line, and I'm sure many people are going to be very interested in reading the rest of his self-publishing story. And I hope that drives more sales for him, it's win-win. But it's not really a Show HN.
- fekberg 14y agoI have written a little bit (3 parts) about it that I shared here. Here's the link: http://blog.filipekberg.se/2012/08/27/self-publishing-a-book-part-1-where-it-all-began/ http://blog.filipekberg.se/2012/08/27/self-publishing-a-book... Self-publishing is the best thing that I've ever done, it's fun and I learnt very much about a lot of different things. If you have any questions that I haven't answered in my blog series (more parts are coming soon), just let me know and I'll try to answer them.
- candicorr 14y agoI'd like to try it, but I can't find any sample chapter.
- fekberg 14y agoThere's a "Look inside" feature available on Amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/C-Smorgasbord-Filip-Ekberg/dp/1468152106/ http://www.amazon.com/C-Smorgasbord-Filip-Ekberg/dp/14681521... ). It will let you read a part of a Chapter.
- philliphaydon 14y agoIt's a good book for any .NET developer. Introduced a few things I didn't know about, well done fekberg.
- celticninja 14y agowhat level of programmer is this aimed at?
- fekberg 14y agoI've had both beginners and very advanced programmers read it and both found things that they liked. When I wrote it I had someone that knew a bit about C# in mind and wanted to explore C# and get a gasp on when to use async/dynamic/roslyn/plinq/etc. Check out the forewords over at http://books.filipekberg.se http://books.filipekberg.se and check the "Look inside" on Amazon to get a better understanding of what you will get from the book.
- celticninja 14y agoI shall do that, I am a beginner starting out in C# so if I do go the route of buying it and learning from it I will let you know how it goes.
- mje 14y agoGreat to the point book. Purchased this book around Christmas and read the first week of the year. I especially liked the Parallel chapter. One thing fekberg, have you tried purchasing the book via create space? I would have given up on step 4 of 16 if the book was on sale.
- fekberg 14y agoThanks, I'm glad you're enjoying the book! Yeah I've purchased my book on CreateSpace a couple of times, I didn't find it much different from other e-stores, maybe it's because I had previously created an account? As far as I know you go through: Buy -> Shipping address -> Shipping method -> Payment -> Receipt. Was it more steps for you than that?
