My Catholic grandmother - who was born Jewish but orphaned and survived Nazism in Vienna - bought my my teenage atheist self this book. It worked on me in a way religion did not and has shaped my life since, leading me towards Ruskin being a pin-up in my historical studies. It's a little crude but really is a great book, and the older I get the truer I think its premise is.
