Economics is about allocating resources in order to produce goods and services that people want and need. A lot of people are spending a lot of time using google and facebook's products these days. Assuming that people are spending time this way because they like what they are getting, and presumably need or want more of it, it makes sense to allocate resources to the upkeep and evolution of these services. How to balance want vs need, and how to add all this up to get a useful total score is, of course, subjective and up for debate.
