Are there guns that <i>don't</i> look frightening? It really just depends on what side of the gun you happen to be standing.

  It's a matter of degree. Matte black guns with pistol grips look "scarier" than the same gun with a traditional stained-wood stock and grip. People look at one and think "weapon of war" while the other says "hunting rifle". (Obviously both deserve and require the same amount of respect and caution.) Look at the old Federal Assault Weapons Ban and it should become pretty apparent what I mean. (PS: you can use italics like this: *foo bar baz* )
