The harsh punishment and discretion of the prosecutors may have had advantage in prosecuting mafia bosses with tax fraud. It did not work in this case. Sometimes American justice system is ineffective. There is little difference between 25 years and 50 years, 100 year sentence is completely absurd. It does not act as a deterrent. Someone else would have sold his skills for crime, if the punishment is so big for an activist kind of activity.
