I find it very, very strange that his first stop wasn't an employment lawyer. He has an employee with a demonstrated willingness to lie about the most important of things, to cause massive distraction and disruption, and to do so with little regret. What else isn't he telling you? If he really doesn't believe he can fire this guy, he has a succession planning problem that needs to be solved.
