Meteor 0.5.3 Released: Deployment Settings, Minimongo, Spark, Accounts
- adamnemecek 14y agoEven though it's still in development, has anyone done anything more substantial in this? Is Meteor all that it is made up to be?
- calgaryeng 14y agoLately I've been wondering if I'm going to learn one of these technologies, why I wouldn't stick with Derby.js . They are using the NPM, and so are way more in touch with teh general Node community. Meteor is doing their own thing, which over the long haul worries me a bit.

- pygy_ 14y agoSocketStream + AngularJS is a pretty good combination too. No data sync, though.
- flexd 14y agoI've seen a lot of people argue Derby is better than Meteor. I have so far used neither. I've briefly used Backbone before switching over to Ember after getting stuck reading Ember docs for a few hours. Considering looking at Derby instead of Ember for a simple single page internal queue-system thing for work. (People who want helpdesk support). It looks a bit 'more magical', if that could count as positive (?). It looks like I would write less code to do the same thing, have you used Ember or Backbone before? Either would probably be good for my needs, I'm just looking to make a good choice and learn something new in the process.
- switz 14y agoJust to clarify something, Derby apps aren't single page apps. They render on both the server and the client which means that it's just as multi-page as any normal website. The distinction is that once you load the page, in most browsers, the page never has to refresh. Data is sent through the wire and the client renders the HTML. Disable javascript and visit http://phishvids.com http://phishvids.com – everything works as if it were a normal website. The server handles all of the rendering.
- kennu 14y agoI had a very bad experience with Derby (apps autogenerated with stable or HEAD version always crashed), so I decided to try Meteor. I was doubtful at first. After generating a simple app that automatically included Bootstrap, Backbone, jQuery, Underscore, MongoDB, user registration and Facebook sign-in, I started to become very happy with it. I was also able to add basic user security (edit only your own database items) very easily. Deployment worked just like they said it would (create a tarball and just run it on your server with Node.js). So, even if Meteor is a bit limited (only a few packages available) and still needs to mature, it feels right. It seems to provide exactly the right things for building web apps, in a way that "just works". I still plan to try Derby once it's fixed but I expect it will be more about hacking and tweaking than things just working.
- robert-zaremba 14y agoNever heard about Derby before. I'm going to have make new project which primary client are mobiles (at the beginning through web browser, later dedicated app). It's seems that Derby manages this task much better, and has better architectural decisions (easily working with different components like Angular, Redis ...). The only thing which wonder me is Derbys scalability issues https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/derbyjs/4fMpQot2hN0 https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/derbyjs/.... But Meteor also doesn't manage it well.

- Ecio78 14y agoTalkin about learning these technologies (Meteor and/or Derby and/or Backbone and/or Ember etc..), what path do you suggest for a sysadmin that used to code years ago (some apps in Delphi/VB and more recently some really small C#/PHP/js but in the cut&paste&modify&see-if-it-works way of coding) and want to start learning js, jquery and so on?
- flexd 14y agoI suggest you just decide to make something small, that does not have to be released. For example: Do you use Zabbix, Nagios or anything like it? Make a website that fetches some info from another site and displays it using javascript.
- Ecio78 14y agoYes I use Zabbix, this is not a bad idea, thank you for your suggestion!
- Jonovono 14y agoI made this to learn Meteor. It is nothing special but I feel I could continue working on it and make it somewhat useful: http://tunes.meteor.com http://tunes.meteor.com. It just allows you to search and play songs and then updates the list every time someone plays a new song. But this is probably the biggest meteor project I have seen yet: http://telesc.pe/ http://telesc.pe/
- pycassa 14y agotunes.meteor.com doesnt look right in smaller browser.. http://i.imgur.com/oZQlG.png http://i.imgur.com/oZQlG.png
- wavesounds 14y agoIt's really fun to program in! Especially if you're already comfortable with javascript and mongo. Heres a list of projects people have made with meteor: http://madewith.meteor.com/ http://madewith.meteor.com/
- yahazee 14y agoThis framework fascinates me day by day. Now I'm going to make new project. I'm Python developer and wondering to use Meteor now.
- charlesjshort 14y agoI'm investing time into Meteor because I think it has a smart model for concurrent user updates.
