I think this person probably didn't want to use their real name (fair enough, these debates can get vitriolic) but wanted to make it clear that they're familiar with the ongoing debate about this topic on HN (I think it has come up enough times to be considered an "ongoing debate"). If I wanted to indicate those things above, how else should I do it? I guess I could include a preamble to my comment explaining it, but that's still going involve mentioning HN.
