The money made to be made (and saved) is based off the prototypes of products created using 3D printing that are mocked up and tweaked, before the designs are handed over to a production line to mass produce. 3D printing has created a useful and affordable process for engineers/creatives/etc to mock up products that would've otherwise been very expensive to outsource, especially with the back and forth between vendors to modify designs.
