One scary fact is that one chemist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Midgley,_Jr. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Midgley,_Jr.) is largely responsible for the development of both Tetra-Ethyl-Lead and CFCs. Scary to think that the things you're working on can have such huge unintended negative side effects.
