In any case, you may need to re-read the post, which I fully agree with. The author's issue is not with the seemingly inexplicable lack of diversity. He is not jumping to any conclusions, his issue is with the overly-defensive response. What's wrong with a simple — and I'm just typing what first comes to mind — "You know what, that was completely not intentional," and work from there.
