I went to Dublin a few years back now, and I had my passport checked as I entered Ireland, but not before I got on the plane and not as I left not when I got back to Gatwick.. in fact I walked off the plane through the baggage claim and back out on to the airport and no one asked me for anything. I think if I'd travelled by ferry, I might not have needed a passport at all.
