DeepSeek V4 Flash. I used Claude before and loved it, no complaint other than it cost more than I’m eager to pay. It's for a side project, so no employer that foots the bill.
Anyway, I switched to DeepSeek V4 Flash and Pro for a while and I enjoyed that it was cheap enough to get work done. I also tried GLM 5.3/5.3-Flash for a while.
The logic behind it: use the more powerful model for deep thinking work, flip to cheaper model for redundant detail work. Which I sort of did for a few weeks, but then started forgetting and could barely tell the difference.
At some point the cheaper Flash models are good enough that I don't need to switch to something more "frontier".
Right now my project is around 320,000 lines of code (including test suite), much of which was written by the $0.14/$0.28 per million tokens model.
