There are some obvious improvements that can be made to the US system of democracy: Ban large donations, or publicly fund candidacies the demonstrate they have a competitive chance. Ranked choice voting. Make voting day a holiday. Promote voting. Etc. None of these are painful, nor do they need to be slow.
